Tell us the basics: Who are you, what’s your company’s name, and how long have you been at this company?

I am architect Neil Bhatt, president of nbj Architecture. I founded this firm in November 2000 to provide client focused Architectural Services.

What led you to start your own architecture firm instead of working for a large, existing firm?

I worked for large architectural/engineering firms since I came to USA in 1982 from Kenya and realized that as much as there are advantages of working for large firms in providing services to your clients due to their vast resources, there is a distinct disadvantage of not being client-focused as your service line becomes another profit center for the company. I have realized that architectural clients expects you to be their sole champion of the project, and you can only do that if you are part of a nimble organization where every member of the firm is empowered to fully serve the projects and clients.
